Strikingly rural in most respects, Shaftsbury was actually a leading iron center in the early 19th century, where "bog" ore was smelted using charcoal from a now deserted town called Glastenbury. Home of Vermont's Governor Galusha a man who had four wives and is quoted as saying "I was twice on earth, once in heaven, and once in hell" in reference to his wives. The view from the height of Historic Route 7A between the flanks of the Taconic and Green Mountains is striking, and suggested the title "Marching Mountains" for the symphony by Arlington composer Carl Ruggles. At one time a center for orchardists, the wax tree-graft method was developed here by David Millington.
