Sneak previews into new exhibits at one of Vermont's finest regional museums, the Bennington Museum.
The Bennington Museum is an exceptional regional history and art museum of national prominence with outstanding collections of early American furniture, decorative arts, paintings and glass. Relive history through its military collections and historical artifacts, including the famous Bennington Flag, tools, toys, dolls and much more. Imagine days gone by as depicted in the largest public collection of art and personal memorabilia of Grandma Moses. Explore the Bennington Pottery Gallery and Study Center showcasing an internationally recognized collection of ceramics produced in Bennington over the last two centuries. A new installation at the Bennington Museum is dedicated to a diverse and engaging display of fine art from the museum's permanent collection. Art of the Region features works that represent regional artists or national artists presenting Vermont themes. Roughly split along its axis right and left, the exhibition presents people and places. Artists represented include such well-known personages as Norman Rockwell, Frederick McMonnies, Lorenzo Hatch, Sister Mary Veronica, Simon Moselsio, Oliver Tarbell Eddy, and Luigi Luccioni. Other fine artists worth further exploration included in the show are John Lillie, James Knox, A. Hale Johnson, Arthur K. D. Healy, W. S. Reynolds, Francis Colburn, and Gene Pelham.
Changing exhibitions for 2004 include Small Works by Pat Adams, a solo exhibition of paintings on view June 4 through 30. A widely acclaimed artist, Adams has not shown recently in the area; the show provides an unusual opportunity to view some of her works from the past decade.
Independence of Thought, Freedom of Speech features the work of renowned photographer Kevin Bubriski with recent photographs of political expression in Bennington. It will be on display through November 12 in the Changing Exhibition Gallery. The often-requested Jane Stickle quilt of Civil War vintage will be on view from September 11 through October 18. This quilt has appeared in numerous quilting books and is the topic of Dear Jane, The Two Hundred Twenty-Five Patterns from the Jane A. Stickle Quilt by Brenda Papadakis. The museum maintains the largest genealogy library in southern Vermont with a collection of 7,300 books, documents and primary sources. It also features a newly expanded Museum Shop (available on-line) where it retails Grandma Moses and Will Moses prints, Fenton and Pairpoint glass, Bennington pottery, books, jewelry, and much more. Attracting over 50,000 visitors every year, the museum has been named as an "Editor's Pick" by Yankee Magazine's Travel Guide to New England for the past eight years. It is located at 75 Main St. (RT 9), one mile west of the intersection of Routes 7 and 9 in downtown Bennington, Vermont. The museum is open daily, November 1 through May 31, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and June 1 through October 31, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed major holidays). Admission $8 adults, $7 students/seniors, under 12 free; group rates are available. For more information call (802) 447-1571 or visit the website at www.benningtonmuseum.org.
